Spotlight Dead Zones in the Chesapeake Bay
According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and many of it rivers and streams are losing their natural resiliency due to pollution, sprawling growth, and loss of habitat. In recent years the Bay's ecosystems have become increasingly unbalanced and are losing their ability to recover from continued pollution. This graph shows the volume (in million cubic meters) of dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay since 1950. Despite the relatively static levels of pollutant loads, evidence suggests the dead zone—the areas of the bay where levels of oxygen are too low to support most aquatic life—has increased over time. Study Buddies: Use of Prescription Stimulants Among College Students
Final exams at many U.S. colleges are just around the corner -- how many students are getting a little extra help studying? A report in Addiction Journal found that 6.9 percent of students had ever used non-medical prescription stimulants (Ritalin, Dexedrine or Adderall). 4.1 percent of students had used stimulants in the past year, and 2.1 percent had used them in the past month. This graph shows the percent of students who had used stimulants in the past year by the U.S. geographical region their college is located in. Rates were higher at colleges located in the north-eastern region of the U.S. and at colleges with more competitive admissions standards. The report also found that stimulant use was higher among college students who were male, white, members of the greek system and earned lower grade point averages. Users were more likely to report use of other recreational drugs.

Rising U.S. Population
A study by the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech predicts that the U.S. population will hit 1 billion between 2100 and 2120. This graph shows the yearly population change in the US since 1900. The last U.S. census conducted in 1999 counted the American population at 272,690,813, just under a third of the one billion mark. Currently the two most populated countries in the world are China with a population of 1.3 billion and India with 1.1 billion. The report suggests that America should begin changing the way we utilize urban space now so that we can accommodate the growing population in the future. Data uploaded by Suite22.
Has the housing market hit bottom?
A blog post on Arlington Condo points to current trends in local real estate as one way to look at the relation between the recession and the housing market in Arlington, Virginia. Some economists think the market has hit bottom and is close to stabilizing, while others forecast it won't hit bottom until later this year. This graph shows the original listing price and the final net close price for condos in Arlington. On average condos are selling at roughly an 8 percent reduction from the original listing price. When the difference between the original listing price and the final net close price (closing price minus seller concessions) begins to narrow, that’s when you know the bottom was reached.
