Spotlight Purging Voter Registration in Colorado
Under federal law, states cannot remove voters from the rolls 90 days before a federal election unless voters die, move out of the state, or have been declared unfit to vote for legal or mental health reasons. But, in some states, like Colorado, the number of purged voter registration far exceeds the number who have died or relocated. Since August 1, more than 37,000 registrations have been purged. This graph shows the percent of purged voter registrations by reason. A larger share of voters removed were Democrats, and more than half of them were active voters in the last two elections (2004 and 2006).

Scary Movie Profits
It's almost Halloween and you know what that means: scary movies galore. This graph shows total profits made on scary movies in the box office and during opening weekend since 2000. Could the increase be due to scary movies getting better? A look at the average tomatometer rating suggests otherwise; ratings dropped to an average of 36 in 2007, down from 83 in 2001. The average profit made per movie shows declines as well. Perhaps its because of the number of scary movies made by major studios in recent years? Fandango search results show that 57 horror genre films were released in 2007 and 31 will be released by the end of 2008. Data uploaded by jtemplon.

Wall Street Meltdowns
This graph shows the top ten greatest single-day drops in the DOW Jones. September 29, 2008 marked the largest single-day drop in history as the DOW plunged 778 points (7%). The recent drops have stoked fears that the U.S. economy is on the verge of a recession, if not already deeply sunk in one. But if we take a look back into history, in terms of market percentage loss we haven't even come close to the catastrophic stock market crashes of 1987, 1929, and 1914. Read more.

Global Nuclear Weapons Stockpile
This graph shows the declining volume of Nuclear Weapons Stockpile in the world, since 1986, when it peaked. However, the sharp descent has been tamed by the fear of some nations to resort to a minimum number for national security. This minimum is still about 20,000 -- enough to destroy the earth a number of times. —Himadri Mayank.
