Dead Zones in the Chesapeake Bay
According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and many of it rivers and streams are losing their natural resiliency due to pollution, sprawling growth, and loss of habitat. In recent years the Bay's ecosystems have become increasingly unbalanced and are losing their ability to recover from continued pollution. This graph shows the volume (in million cubic meters) of dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay since 1950. Despite the relatively static levels of pollutant loads, evidence suggests the dead zone—the areas of the bay where levels of oxygen are too low to support most aquatic life—has increased over time.
