While one does not necessarily cause the other, there seems to be a correlation between <a href='http://www.swivel.com/graphs/show/22995157'>depression and drinking alcohol</a> or using other illicit drugs. According to the 2005 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, "research suggests that adults and adolescents with major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year were more likely than those without MDE to have used alcohol heavily or to have used an illicit drug in the past year." Prevalence of depression was about the same across all <a href=' http://www.swivel.com/graphs/show/22994818'>racial/ethnic</a> groups. However, in teenagers <a href='http://www.swivel.com/graphs/show/22994802'>ages</a> 12 to 17 years old, the prevalence of a MDE increased every year, peaking at 11.9 percent for 17 year olds.
