Wal-Mart versus Target Stores: Average Rate of Reported Violent & Serious Crime Incidents We also analyzed whether any difference existed between Wal-Mart and Target in the number of reported police incidents defined as “serious or violent crimes.” (See definitions set forth in Section C.) Again, based on the sample of 32 high incident Wal-Mart stores and 30 Target stores, with the data for two Target stores counted twice, a striking difference existed between the rates of “serious or violent crime” incidents at Wal-Mart stores versus nearby Target stores. In total, 648 “serious or violent” incidents were reported at the Wal-Mart stores versus 100 at nearby Target stores. On average, 20.25 “serious or violent” criminal incidents were reported per Wal-Mart store versus 3.13 per Target store. Based on this analysis, Wal-Mart stores experienced 6 times the number of reported criminal incidents defined as “serious or violent” than nearby Target stores in 2004.20

My fiance and I witnessed a crash in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Those of us who were parked nearby were asked to wait to give our statements to the police. For nearly an hour, we just sat there while Wal-Mart employees stood around and laughed at the situation. I would have thought the store could be a little more hospitable to people in a distressing situation (although it was a relatively minor mishap.) No Wal-Mart employee made any attempt to comfort the old man who was in shock after having crashed his car into someone else's, or do anything at all for the rest of us. It would have been nice for them to give us something to drink, ask if we needed to use a telephone, etc. Poor human relations. Needless to say, I avoid that Wal-Mart now. It just gave me a creepy feeling.

Holiday shoppers beware of the consistent pan handling which continues at the Janaf Center Walmart in Norfolk, VA. It happened to me again this AM right in front of the Securitas security firm. My car was not even in park when a man approached my driver’s side door. "Lady, LADY - spare some change???"

"NO - TAKE A HIKE!" I spoke from inside my locked vehicle... clutching my cell phone.

Securitas did NOTHING! I could see the car in the far corner of the lot - just parked. After shoo-ing the beggar away, I walked across
the lot to the parked Securitas car. The 20 something, so-called security kid, barely looked me in the eye. He was far too busy text
messaging on his cell phone to be concerned with my problem of feeling threatened in this parking lot.

Hopefully my complaint to his employer will make change happen. (George, thank you for being so kind & on the ball.) I also called the Wal-Mart manager. Bill seemed mildly amused with my story. Clearly he's heard these stories before.

Manager Bill didn't give me a sense of being pro-active. Make change happen people!!!

This is not my first, nor second or even third run in with beggars & other derelict people in the Janaf Center Wal-Mart parking lot. Nor
is it my first time experiencing this on the inside of the store.

Dear looney gentleman sitting on the bench near customer service. Do you have Turrets Syndrome? Get help. Stop yelling, screaming, talking
to yourself and your imaginary friend. You scare my kid and everyone in the checkout line.

Dear Wal-Mart employees.... DO SOMETHING! Have you all become desensitized to such crazy behavior in your store?
