Campaign Contributions and the Climate Security Act of 2008

On May 20, Barbara Boxer introduced the Liberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2008. The bill was meant to direct the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency to establish a program to decrease emissions of greenhouse gases. The bill did not make it to the senate for full debate; it was rejected in a cloture motion with 48 yes votes, 36 no votes, and 16 abstains. While the bill may have honorable intentions, it is not free from the influence of campaign contributions from interest groups. This graph shows the total campaign contributions received by each senator from interests who supported the bill and those who opposed the bill.
Presidential candidate Barack Obama did not vote, but he has received $3,651,413 from groups who did want the bill to become law, and 389,100 from groups who did not want the bill to become law. John McCain also abstained; he has received campaign contributions totaling $1,685,153 from groups supporting the bill and $1,805,219 from groups opposing the bill. —Natalie |
