would be cool to compare this with china's trade surplus to see how much the US contributes to it. we might see some redistribution of wealth in action.

Is this nominal dollars or inflation-adjusted dollars? Don't see any reference to in on the source page, so it's probably unadjusted dollars. We need to be able to adjust for inflation.

It would be more useful to see this debt plotted against GNP or GDP, especially for the last 100 years. Then compare it to other countries' similar data. Just like with individuals, the more money you have the more debt you afford. This would spur useful analysis and commentary.

So, could you compare national debt to individual wealth disparity? To Big-Oil profits?

It's a crazy realization to find out aproximatly how much national Debt we have and yet we spend money on things we don't necessarily need.
