A definition of savings would be nice to see. For instance, some measures of savings don't include the money that accumulates in the main US retirement program called the 401K. The money that goes into the program is counted but not the appreciation once it is invested. This is a huge part of people's portfolios in the US and it is why I am always sceptical about graphs like these.

Hey Keith, check out the source link just under the graph. It says that here, savings means "household disposable income". So, probably doesn't include 401(k) accounts.

It does not include 401(k), pensions and Social Security. Hence sometimes comparing savings rate across various countries is like comparing apples and oranges.
