The link between cell phones and brain cancer has been largely dismissed by The American Cancer Association and the Food and Drug Administration. However, according to an article in the New York Times, three prominent neurosurgeons recently told CNN's Larry King that they do not hold cell phones to their ears. Dr. Keith Black, a surgeon in Los Angeles, told King, "I think the safe practice is to use an earpiece so you keep the microwave antenna away from your brain." This graph shows the number of cell phone subscribers (in millions) in the United States since 1993. Another Swivel graph shows the prevalence of brain cancer (per 100,000 people) in the United States since 2000. While the number of cell phone subscribers has increased exponentially, the prevalence of brain cancer looks like it has decreased slightly. However, many research studies conducted on the link between cell phones and brain cancer only look at short term damage, so the research doesn't answer questions about long term exposure. —Natalie
