A donut's design is as much marketing as it is overall taste and customer loyalty. Remember, the way a donut is thrust into the consumer's mouth is a function of the volume of consumers divided by the available number of retail outlets carrying a particular brand. In the south, there where KrispyKremes dominate the market, the real estate (both commercial and residential) is pretty well sewn up. I would suggest making your own for the freshest results, rather than staring at a graph all day...no hot oil here. Move along.
