Final exams at many U.S. colleges are just around the corner -- how many students are getting a little extra help studying? A report in Addiction Journal found that 6.9 percent of students had ever used non-medical prescription stimulants (Ritalin, Dexedrine or Adderall). 4.1 percent of students had used stimulants in the past year, and 2.1 percent had used them in the past month. This graph shows the percent of students who had used stimulants in the past year by the U.S. geographical region their college is located in. Rates were higher at colleges located in the north-eastern region of the U.S. and at colleges with more competitive admissions standards. The report also found that stimulant use was higher among college students who were male, white, members of the greek system and earned lower grade point averages. Users were more likely to report use of other recreational drugs. —Natalie
