Bureau of Justice Statistics (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bj...)
A justifiable homicide is defined as the killing of a felon by a law enforcement officer in the line of duty or the killing of a felon during the commission of a felony by a private citizen. This graph shows the number of justifiable homicides committed by police officers and private citizens between 1976 and 2005. The number of justifiable homicides committed by the police tends to exceed the number committed by citizens. In the last 10 years the number of justifiable homicides has declined 13 percent.
