When it comes to methodology for selecting the world's most powerful celebrities, Forbes magazine says, "The Celebrity 100 measures power, which boils down to two components: money and fame." This graph shows the relationship between a celebrity's Forbes ranking and their earnings in the past year. The highest earners on the list are J.K. Rowling, with 300 million dollars making her the richest author on the planet, and Oprah Winfrey, who made 275 million last year. Many of the top ranking celebrities earn upwards of 50 million a year. However, Forbes ranks celebrities by both money and fame. Does fame outweigh high income? The lowest earnings on the top 10 list actually belong to power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Jolie ranks third on the list and earns 14 million a year; Pitt ranks number 10 and earns 20 million. Their celebrity power may also come from a combination of web, press, and TV rankings. A blog post on Trendspotting takes a look at the power of social media and celebrities. Data uploaded by apurba and Natalie. —Natalie

Great to see the power of social media!
Despite weakening television ratings and magazine circulation, Winfrey earned $275 million ,which in a way secured her top position. On the other hand ,Jolie maintains a commendable influence on the blogosphere over Winfrey & Woods ,which helped her in grabbing the third position.
