According to a report prepared by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, "based on the sample of 32 high incident Wal-Mart stores and 30 Target stores, with the data for two Target stores counted twice, a striking difference existed between the rates of “serious or violent crime” incidents at Wal-Mart stores versus nearby Target stores." Data is for 2004. —Dmitry

The source for this data is biased and unscientific...read it carefully before drawing any conclusions from this. Keep in mind that the Wal-Mart stores probably have more traffic and longer operating hours than the "nearby" Target stores used in the study.

I agree with the previous commenter. If data is available for a specific time period, then I would use that for comparison, but then also you need to normalize the data - perhaps by reporting the data as incidents per 1000 customers. There be some spatial bias as well - doesn't do much good to compare an urban Walmart with a rural Target, or vice versa.
