Why did you choose the lower end of each of the ranges? There's good reason to think that on a question that some would consider as "hot" as this, people would bias answers toward the low end. Survey's I've seen suggest that the % in the US is more than the 9% at the top of the range in the data. (13% has shown up on recent surveys.)

This whole list is one big surprise for me. I'd never have guessed this is what it looks like.

This looks like total BS. There are hella Catholics in Vietnam and I'm sure it's more than 19%.

actually if u read the source it quotes this from the studies: "* NOTE: The estimates of the number of atheists in North Korea, China and Cuba may be unreliable. The best data available have been used in making these estimates, but the people in these three nations live under Communist governments which have traditionally suppressed religious freedom and officially (often forcibly) endorsed atheism."

I believe that the core issue in this study is that it is looking from a Judeo-Christian perspective. If you ask a Buddhist "Do you believe in God," they would say "No," but if you asked if they believe in life after death, reincarnation, a greater power, etc., they would say "Yes." Hence some of the bias. Also, it seems that the surveys conducted in different countries could have skewed results.

Debunker makes a good point. The context in which any question is set is very important. Even in the Judaeo-Christian-Muslim world the meaning of the word God has different meanings for different people.

3% in US sounds like B.S. to me. I would find it difficult to believe more than 50% believe in god. I would be willing to bet it is more a question of asking people what religion they are. People are likely to name a religion even if they don't believe in god.

Additionally, I have encountered many people who will identify as believing in God, but upon further questioning do not attend Church and only vaguely believe in God, having not really thought about it or given it much weight. There seem to be a lot of people who identify as Christian and believing in God, but are clearly in a different class than fundamentalist evangelist Christians, for example. This survey equates the most apathetic and unsure believer to someone with a stronger belief, and an apathetic atheist to a militant one who has strong philosophical reasons for choosing atheism.

However, in some cases it does seem to be reasonably accurate.

I've been to Vietnam. The people there seemed very grateful for the little that most of them had. huh...

We need to elect a Vietnamese Buddhist for president of U.S. We need someone in the chair with knowledge of karma. I'd take that knowledge over the anglo-saxon divine right.

"but...watch out...remember the gulf of tonkin....he's a commie....and he's an atheist!!"

The City University of New York disagrees with you on your numbers of Atheist and non belivers in USA. They did 10 year study and found that from 1990 to 2001 Non believers grew to 14% of population. Thanks
