More crime, more prisoners - sounds plausible, right? However, which OECD country has only a medium crime victims score (24%) but a more than three times higher prisoner population than the country with the highest crime rate (36%), New Zealand? —Dashboard

This is an awesome graph because it displays how ridiculous the US is in a very blantant way. It'd be interesting to see the breakdown of what the prisoners were charged with in all the countries: I feel like the US mostly jails druggies.

Actually, while it does seem plausible that the US has harsher laws to punish criminals, it's also possible that the link is in finding the perpretrator of a crime. You could argue that the US has more advanced technologies and commits more resources than many other countries. A better way to make the case that the US incarcerates at a higher rate would be to show the number of criminals incarcerated versus not, controlling for type of crime.

Why is Japan so low...easy, their all most all Japanese. The prisoner rate in the U.S. is so high because they've made a business out of prisons and we have law makers that continuously make laws day in and day out year after year with no end in sight. We should have a set limits on laws. 10,000 max.. Need a new law, fine, take away the least important one from the list of 10,000. Need less drug related prisoners? Two things. One, eliminate the big boys at the top of the food chain getting wealthy off the enslavement brought on by deliberately planed addiction of the disposable lower class. Two, reintroduce reason and decency in the mass consciousness of American people and force the government to go back to the ideals, ideas, structure and values set forth originally by the founding fathers, the original intent and purpose of the Constitution. Not this hypocritical mockery that is a sad facade of what our country was designed to be.
