According to the timeline on the Everest History site (http://www.everesthistory.c...) the first successful summit took place in 1953. That must've shown the way for others later, but maybe before few people thought it could ever be done and few even thought tried.
I would like to look at the availability and price of local sherpas as well - that might be encouraging people to give it a try - knowing they have affordable pros helping them.
I saw some data awhile back about average price per summit. That would be an interesting breakdown on this topic.
