Because airline fatalities are such a rarity (fewer than 500 in the max year of the period, veruses over 600 million enplanements that year - literally less than 1 in a million!) - the more interesting thing to see about this is how airplane accidents (particularly the big ones) affect usage. Why was it that 2001 had a much bigger impact on usage than 1996?

For those not under a rock for the last ten years, the 2001 blip is a "duh" item. I want to see if I can correlate this graph to vehicle fatalities versus vehicle miles driven for the same period. What that will show you is that the number of car fatalities in 2001 is so much greater than the 2000. In fact, in the 3 months from 9/11/01-12/31/01, the increase in the number of fatalities on US roads versus the same period the year before was greater than the total loss of life on 9/11.

Interesting analysis. Have you been able to find vehicle fatality data?
