Music has played a large part in human society for over 4000 years. Today, due to varying cultures and geographical regions, many different types of music exist, separated loosely into genres. According to Peter van der Merwe, a musical genre is "a category of pieces of music that share a certain style or 'basic musical language.' " Ever since Rock and Roll evolved in the 1940's from Blues and Country music, it has remained America's number one choice in musical style. Music is sold in many different formats and enjoyed by people of all ages. —Devon

It's interesting to see that rap/hip hop sales dropped off in the late 90s, while rock & roll continuously remains the most popular genre. It would be cool to look at big events or celebrities (Tupac's death, Britney Spears, Madonna's reinventions) to see how it affected that genres music sales.

I've developed a music visualization that shows relationships among genre, time, rating, and artist at http://cityscape.inf.cs.cmu...
You can only look at the popularity over time of one genre at a time, but you can also see it's relationships to all the other attributes. It highlights statistically significant correlations.

I created and developed all music and I read your graph and thought what a load. This is the biggest waste of my time since I read that pie graph about procrastination
