Oil sands operations in Northern Alberta use water to extract bitumen from the oil sands. The water is then dumped in large lakes, known as tailings ponds, the composition of one such pond is given above. The ponds must be guarded with scare-crows and noise making air cannons to keep the wildlife away, as they are effectively toxic sludge. —selenized
