While Americans pride themselves on the freedom to roam, data from AAA predicts that many may actually be staying home over the 4th of July weekend. This graph shows the number of people (in millions) who made plans to travel over the 4th of July weekend by year. AAA predicts 40.4 million Americans will still travel this weekend, about half a million less than last year.

Despite high gas prices, 34.2 million Americans plan to travel by automobile. 4.5 million plan to travel by plane, a 2.3 percent decrease from last year. And 1.7 million travelers are opting for modes of alternative transportation such as trains and buses. Whether you're traveling for the holidays or staying home, happy Fourth of July! According to the National Interagency Fire Center, there were a total of 31 fires burning in California yesterday, covering 333,838 acres (an area 23 times the size of Manhattan). The trend line on this graph shows the average size of wildfires in the United States since 1960. Last year, a total of 85,705 wildland fires burned over 9 million acres, or an average of 102 acres per fire.

California firefighters have had some trouble gaining the upper hand on the fire raging in Big Sur. Since the fire was ignited by lightning on June 21, it has burned about 32,500 acres and destroyed 16 homes. A recent news article suggests that the fire has been difficult to contain, in part, because of problems posed by the terrain. The surrounding area is heavily wooded with steep slopes that make work slow-going for the 1,000 firefighters battling the flames. The fire could also be difficult to contain because of it's sheer size -- this graphs suggests that the average size of fires increases every year. [Submitted by Natalie]

Do cell phones cause brain cancer?

The link between cell phones and brain cancer has been largely dismissed by The American Cancer Association and the Food and Drug Administration. However, according to an article in the New York Times, three prominent neurosurgeons recently told CNN's Larry King that they do not hold cell phones to their ears. Dr. Keith Black, a surgeon in Los Angeles, told King, "I think the safe practice is to use an earpiece so you keep the microwave antenna away from your brain." This graph shows the number of cell phone subscribers (in millions) in the United States since 1993. Another Swivel graph shows the prevalence of brain cancer (per 100,000 people) in the United States since 2000. While the number of cell phone subscribers has increased exponentially, the prevalence of brain cancer looks like it has decreased slightly. However, many research studies conducted on the link between cell phones and brain cancer only look at short term damage, so the research doesn't answer questions about long term exposure. When it comes to methodology for selecting the world's most powerful celebrities, Forbes magazine says, "The Celebrity 100 measures power, which boils down to two components: money and fame." This graph shows the relationship between a celebrity's Forbes ranking and their earnings in the past year. The highest earners on the list are J.K. Rowling, with 300 million dollars making her the richest author on the planet, and Oprah Winfrey, who made 275 million last year. Many of the top ranking celebrities earn upwards of 50 million a year. However, Forbes ranks celebrities by both money and fame. Does fame outweigh high income? The lowest earnings on the top 10 list actually belong to power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Jolie ranks third on the list and earns 14 million a year; Pitt ranks number 10 and earns 20 million. Their celebrity power may also come from a combination of web, press, and TV rankings.
