Featured Graphs

Average Income Tax of Canadians by Quintile

This shows the average income tax paid by each 1/5 of the population (based on after-tax income). Economic families are separated from individuals. What we see is that the majority of the tax burden is shouldered by the richest of Canadians -- the richest 40% of families pay 78% of total income tax, the with richest 20% paying 55%. Similarly with individuals the richest 40% pay 89% of the total income tax, the richest 20% paying 67%.

One might conclude that the social programs that most benefit the poorest of Canadians are largely paid for by the richest of Canadians.

Total GHG (% of 1990) and "Intensity" (% 1990)

Alberta's provincial plan on greenhouse gas emissions centers around reduction in "Intensity" -- the amount of CO2 equivalents released per $ of GDP. This is just a useless slight of hand, as actual emissions can increase greatly while the "Intensity" goes down.

Natalie: Great data. Thanks for sharing! You should check out the Swivel Data Team, if you get a chance. This would make a great feature story. :) http://www.swivel.com/groups/show/1000132 (11 months ago)
