Population vs. Total Metrorail Daily Ridership Average Daily Ridership vs. Total Metrorail Daily Ridership Average Daily Ridership

While the Daily Ridership graph seems to show us "good" news about public transportation, we need to look deeper. This view of that graph versus the population of the city itself betrays the reality that people are moving farther from the city center and that people who work in the city are less likely to live in it. Those two realities actually have a negative effect on the environment and on overall city life (schools, social capital, etc.). Before we get too excited about the ridership figures (which I think are very good), we must take them in the context of the overall growth of the metro area.

Jacob: I tend to agree with nephi's reasoning for geographical and seasonal contributions. Another contributing factor might be that Alaska has the highest male-to-female ratio of any state. (Census 2000 data). (about 1 year ago)
yoavlurie: I just visited a number of these states in order to have this conversation with folks who work in child-serving organizations (this is what I do for a living) - and, it turns out, that the unifying factor between many of these states is that they are not having open conversations about the dangers of sexual predators. They have poor reporting laws and low requirements for hiring standards. Therefore, convicted child molesters are more likely to move to these states. Remember, this data is about the number of people on the sex offender registry - so, it only counts people who have been convicted and now are required to register. These people move - and are more likely to move to states where the laws will enable them to have access to kids again. (about 1 year ago)
: sex offenders and their rights...I say hang em high! They are murdering our youth and their innocence. (about 1 year ago)

Natalie: Great insight. Thank you for sharing this :) Also, if you change the comparison to absolute the graph shows actual population and ridership instead of relative values: http://www.swivel.com/graphs/show/25566429?graph%5Bscale%5D=absolute (9 months ago)
Natalie: It's good to see that more people are taking public transportation. I wonder if the sharp increase since 2001 might be because of rising environmental consciousness and/or rising gas prices. http://www.swivel.com/graphs/show/25501550 (9 months ago)
yoavlurie: Please see my comparison of this graph and the DC city population. There is much more here in terms of the growth of the metro area and how it has happened at the expense of urban schools and local culture. http://www.swivel.com/graphs/show/25566429 (9 months ago)
