About Me

In 1993, I graduated with a BA in economics from the University of Chicago. I have worked in the financial sector for 9 years. Returning to school in 2002, I completed the 2 year Master's program in Interaction Design at Carnegie Mellon University. At my blog, Visualizing Economics , I take the techniques and methods of information design and apply them to data sets buried on government and academic web sites.

Future of the family farm

According to the USDA, it used to be assumed that farming households received all of their income from the farm business. That is no longer the case. This data shows which portion of their total income is from the farm vs other business.

US Income Distribution (less than $250,000 )

While the original Census data can be found in U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey Table HINC-06, I used it to calculate the number of households per $10,000 increments for this graph. This smooths out the curve while still showing the basic shape. Median is $46,000 while the Mean(average) is $63,000. You can find more information about US Income Distribution at my blog Visualizing Economics
