June 26 marks International Day in Support of Torture Victims. Kofi Anaan recounts, "This is a day on which we pay our respects to those who have endured the unimaginable...[and] an occasion for the world to speak up against the unspeakable." This graph shows victims of torture and their respective regions of origin that received treatment at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture in the UK. Most victims appear to be fleeing from Africa (53%) and the Middle East (17%). The Medical Foundation's clients in 2006 were composed of 56% men, 35% women, and 9% children. The date also honors the day the UN's Convention Against Torture came into effect. Today, of the 192 members of the United Nations 74 countries have signed the convention; 144 have ratified. |
